29 November 2022
Adding natural light into your room couldn’t be any easier, both roof lanterns and windows offer fantastic benefits, such as: saving energy costs, large inlets of natural light, fantastic thermal retention & much more. As part of FORTs Estimating Service we can quantify, clarify & arrange delivery of your perfect roof window or lantern. To help you make your choice, we’ve outlined the main differences between the two.
Roof Lanterns
Roof lanterns are a fantastic option if you are looking to add natural light to a space. Serving as an architectural skylight structure which can be installed on a flat roof, whether original or part of an extension. Because of its unique design, compared to traditional roof windows, a roof lantern offers a large inlet of natural light. A typical roof lantern will have 4 sides although with various designs & specifications available on the current market there are options for further ridges & corners, adding to the many great benefits of having a roof lantern installed.
Both installers & manufacturers are becoming increasingly more aware of the impact our homes have on the environment and are choosing to follow the movement. Having natural light enter your home will help you to reduce your usage of electricity, ultimately boosting your contribution to sustainable living. Using diecast aluminium components, Korniche roof lanterns are created with superb accuracy and tighter tolerances that delivers fantastic weather resistance and thermal retention.
FORT can supply either PVC, timber, or aluminium roof lanterns - giving the customer the complete option on customization. The possibilities are endless when deciding on the perfect lantern - bear in mind there are different configurations, colours (both internal and external) & sizes available to choose from. Our estimating team can help you, the customer, from deciding on which configuration would suit best to the exact sizing needed for your project.
Roof Windows
FORT can supply quality roof windows in a range of different designs & specifications. Using specific box kits, roof windows can be fitted on flat roofs, but the main area of use is for loft and garage conversions, extensions & alterations where more light is required, including industrial buildings. Keylite, the UK based primary producer of roof windows, provides an excellent range that includes all manner of options, including Heritage style, which are often required in rural settings.
One of the many great benefits of a roof window, apart from significant light gain is improved natural ventilation. Unlike roof lanterns , (which are fixed structures with no openings) roof windows can be opened by hand or through mechanical and electrical options, including remote control units. Advances in solar power for recharging also means that integral or surface fitted blinds can be remote controlled without any need for direct wiring.
