Flat roofing consists of various materials and methods, one being EPDM. Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer is a synthetic rubber roofing membrane commonly used in flat roofing, due to its durable & long-lasting properties - this is a popular solution for installers in the UK. Having lightweight properties it is easier to install, and it is also waterproof & temperature resistant.

Another option for flat roofing is torch-on felt, a quick and reliable solution that is also readily available in the UK. Felt can be torched down onto timber, concrete or metal flat roofs using a hot flame & the correct equipment. Who should apply torch on felt? An experienced professional with all the correct tools & experience to complete the installation.

  • Cold Roof

Instead of fitting the insulation above the structure of the roof, to correctly insulate a cold roof you must cut and "fit" insulation between the timber deck frame. This requires more time and experience & can also lead to issues with moisture - due to thermal bridging, as mentioned above. To ensure a cold roof does not suffer damage from humidity, adequate ventilation is required. Without proper ventilation, air that passes through may turn into condensation which leads to water droplets & can damage your ceiling.

  • Warm Roof

The insulation is fitted above the timber decking, an efficient & easy method for flat roofing insulation. This also means that no ventilation is required above the roof's structure, bringing less risk of thermal bridging (where cold air travels through the timber rafters, which can create condensation - leading to mould and internal damage). As the name suggests, a warm roof keeps the timber warm which ensures protection from any potential humidity.

Warm roofs are typically the most cost-effective solution for flat roofing, this is due to less risk of internal damage from moisture caused by thermal bridging. Where warm roofs are not a possibility, due to a low roof such as an extension, a cold roof is the better option if adequate ventilation is installed.
